Base salary is the number everyone quotes. It's rarely the number you're actually paid. Add the bonus, the retirement match, what your employer puts toward benefits, and the value of your time off, and see the whole picture.
Enter a base salary
Base + bonus + (base × match %) + (monthly employer benefits × 12) + (PTO days × your daily rate, which is base ÷ 260). Bonus is counted at target, since that's the number in the offer. The match only counts if you contribute enough to earn it. Benefits are what the employer pays, not what comes out of your check. This is the same formula HR teams use when they say a job "is worth" more than its salary.
• Two offers with different bases but different benefits. The lower base sometimes wins.
• Deciding whether a move from a big company (rich benefits) to a small one (thin benefits) is really a raise.
• Understanding the "total rewards statement" HR sends you every year.
What It Pays™ tracks all of this for you over time and compares any offer on total compensation, not just base. Start with the free two-minute check.
